Nic Campbell

Monday  |   6:30 – 8:00pm

Established in 2010, the Northern Rivers Youth Jazz Orchestra (YJO) is the leading pre-professional big band in the Northern Rivers for musicians aged 13-24. Directed by Nic Campbell, who trained with Cristina Leonard at the Sydney Conservatorium, YJO boasts a full complement of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, piano, bass, and guitar.

The orchestra excels in jazz, funk, soul, blues, and fusion, and relishes the challenge of mastering complex charts by Gordon Goodwin, Tower of Power, Glenn Miller, and Duke Ellington. YJO frequently performs locally and has collaborated with jazz legends like James Morrison and Paul Grabowsky. Alumni have advanced their studies at top institutions, including Monash University and Griffith University, and new members are always welcome.

This is an ensemble designed to complement and enhance the work that the students are doing in their lessons. The repertoire covers a number of styles from baroque through to rock/jazz. It is here that we explore listening skills for pitch, rhythm, tone and texture within the ensemble as well as the basic “playing together”.

Chamber Strings is a youth ensemble with a minimum standard of AMEB 4th grade through to 8th grade. This group is conductor-less to encourage the players to listen and communicate with each other.

  • “Studying at the Northern Rivers Conservatorium has been a highlight of my children's week going on 13 years now. Through floods and fires and covid, the Con was still a major part of their community life and helped inspire them to continue playing and working towards their goals, no matter the obstacles. We’ve been so grateful to have access to such a high-quality musical education for our children, even though we live rurally. ”

    Tara Luca, Parent
  • “All research regarding the study of music states young people develop their cognitive skills faster through learning a musical instrument. Some even say: music makes you smarter!”

    David O’Meara, Brass Tutor
  • “The quality teaching, sense of community, and numerous performance opportunities provided by the NRC have equipped our sons with the skills and confidence to perform in front of any audience - they are flourishing, and we're delighted!”

    Janos and Catriona Ertz, Parents
  • “Singing is one of life’s joys, and something everyone can learn to do. It’s wonderful to see students relax and build trust in their instrument through learning how to listen more effectively, learning how their voice works and how to use it with more ease and confidence.”

    Imogen Wolf, Vocal Tutor
  • “The thrill of 'I can do it!' is, ageless, often inspiring creativity and a life-long passion for music.”

Wendy Ford, Piano / Vocal / Guitar Tutor
  • “Something magical happens when people play music together. For that one moment, the whole group is feeling and adding to the same energy, working together towards a common goal.”

Justin Bannister, Piano Tutor / Soul Good Band Conductor
