The Northern Rivers Conservatorium’s Youth Jazz Orchestra was established in 2010 by Julius Hofstetter who is a passionate devotee of big band music. YJO, as they are affectionately known, relish the challenge of mastering and performing Latin, Swing, Funk and Ballad tunes by composers and arrangers such as Sammy Nesitco, Duke Ellington and Bob Mintzer. YJO is the leading jazz ensemble for young people in the Northern Rivers.
Intermediate to advanced level high school students who play saxophone, trumpet, trombone, or rhythm are invited to take part in an amazing Youth Jazz Orchestra workshop and concert with KEN STUBBS.
Ken Stubbs is a music educator and saxophonist and has created a seminal work on jazz improvisation available on jazztuition.com.au Ken has been a saxophone tutor at Queensland Conservatorium of Music as well as a saxophone tutor and big band director at both Southern Cross University, Lismore and Northern Rivers Conservatorium Arts Centre, NSW. He has played and recorded with Australian jazz and improvising musicians Paul Grabowsky, Simon Barker, Steve Newcomb, Brett Hirst, Matt McMahon, Scott Tinkler, John Morrison and John Hoffman.

When you see YJO perform, you are hearing some of the most talented young musicians across the Northern Rivers region. In fact, many YJO alumni have gone on to further study at some of the top tertiary institutions across the country including Brisbane Conservatorium and Monash University. YJO perform regularly across the region and over the years have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with such stellar artists as John Hoffman who has played with Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra, internationally acclaimed pianist and composer Paul Grabowsky and leading music educator and conductor, the late Richard Gill.
