The Northern Rivers Conservatorium is thrilled to be presenting a workshop with the wonderful Sharny Russell – Piano Method for Jazz Singers – based on her newly released book and audio publication.
Known for her world class artistry and joyful stage presence, award winning jazz vocalist, pianist and songwriter, SHARNY RUSSELL is one of the country’s most accomplished and loved jazz artists.
Sharny has been described as Australia’s Diana Krall, being equally gifted as a pianist and a singer. Having played with most of the best in the business, Sharny has shared the stage with James Morrison, Galapagos Duck, Grace Knight, Vince Jones, George Washingmachine, Emma Pask, British guitarist Martin Taylor and French Brazillian artist Tania Maria.
In addition to her acclaim as an artist, Sharny is also a highly respected educator, having taught jazz a tertiary level for many years. Her students include the amazing Dami Im who won the fifth Australian season of the X Factor and 2nd place winner of Eurovision 2016.
“Piano Method for Jazz Singers” is unique in that it trains jazz singers, or other non-piano-playing musicians, to easily find their way around the piano keyboard with a sense of familiarity, while playing a basic accompaniment that sounds musical and jazz-like. It does not teach in a linear style, but rather a vertical-building style. The course contains exercises that have proven to be quite meditative in their style, while building a firm foundation for the singer to easily find chords. The method also assists in training the ear, and provides a strong theoretical understanding without being overly academic or intimidating. The method has been tried and tested over years of tertiary jazz teaching by the author.
Join Sharny at the Northern Rivers Conservatorium on Saturday 17th August 1:00 – 4:30pm as she takes you through the practical, fun and illuminating “Piano Method for Jazz Singers”.
