Completed this week, the project was funded through Create NSW’s Creative Capital Program and delivered with the help of skilled local contractors. The upgrade brings the Concert Room to a new standard of professional excellence while maintaining its warmth, accessibility and community spirit.

The work includes a new stage, lighting, acoustic treatment, PA system, seating, and a hearing loop. Together, these improvements have turned the space into a flexible, inclusive venue.  Ideal for performances, rehearsals, and community gatherings of up to 80 people.

“This upgrade gives Lismore a beautiful new venue for intimate concerts, education and community events – a space that connects people through music and creativity,” said Anita Bellman Director of the Northern Rivers Conservatorium. “We’re deeply grateful for the support of Create NSW and their team, who guided and encouraged us every step of the way. Their partnership has been invaluable.”

The Creative Capital Program was introduced to strengthen cultural infrastructure across NSW, ensuring communities can enjoy high-quality creative experiences close to home. For Lismore, this investment means more than improved facilities: it represents confidence in the city’s cultural renewal and the Northern Rivers’ thriving arts community.

The project immediately came to life with a series of special events. The Listening Sessions in the Round – the Conservatorium’s first venue hire in the new space which sold out. Followed by the Scholarship Concert, the first major performance on the refurbished stage. Both events showcased the impressive sound, comfort and versatility of the new venue.

The Scholarship Concert showcased the talent and dedication of students supported through the Harmony Fund, Maria Hogan Family, and several secret sponsors. These scholarships provide vital opportunities for young musicians through audition and judged by music educators and industry professionals.

“This is more than a building upgrade – it’s an investment in connection,” Anita Bellman added. “Investing in music education means investing in our future thinkers, creators and cultural community leaders. We’re excited to see how local musicians, teachers and audiences will make this room sing.”

Tomorrow, the venue will host the Big Play Day, welcoming students from 50 plus students from schools across the region as part of the Music in Schools Program another joyful expression of how music connects and uplifts.

The Northern Rivers Conservatorium warmly thanks Create NSW, the local contractors, and everyone who contributed to bringing this vision to life. The upgraded Concert Room now stands as a new venue for Lismore a space for creativity, collaboration and celebration.

An official launch event will be held early next year to formally open the upgraded Concert Room and celebrate this milestone with the community.
