Get ready for an explosion of tropical sounds and rhythms as saxophonist Gai Bryant brings her exceptional all star band for a series of performance and workshops in Northern NSW and Brisbane.  The Sydney-based quintet comprises the talents of bassist Brendan Clarke, guitarist Jeremy Sawkins, trombonist and trumpeter Danny Carmichael, drummer Paul Derricott and saxophonist / composer Gai Bryant.  The performances and workshops will celebrate their passion for Cuban music genres such as cha cha chá, rumba, bolero, son and Jazz.

Gai and her quintet will present a very special, NESA accredited Professional Development course for North Coast Music Teachers – JAZZ BY JAZZ MUSICIANS.

This course addresses several professional standards for teachers including the development of activities for students across a range of abilities, understanding of concepts specific to jazz music and ensemble preparation, strategies that support participation and promotes the development of teacher skills.  It addresses curriculum requirements including Australian music of the last 25 years.

The course is based on a Spare Parts Production eBook, endorsed and trialled by the University of Sydney Music Education Unit, which features music by some of Australia’s finest jazz musicians: Warwick Alder, Gai Bryant, Sandy Evans, Craig Scott and Alister Spence.  The book provides:

  • full ensemble charts
  • audio examples
  • play along tracks
  • rehearsal suggestions presented in an accessible and easy-to-use format
  • additional composer notes give valuable insights into the inspirations behind the composing process of each tune

Over the course of three hours, teachers will learn three pieces that display varying degrees of difficulty.  All three can be used to promote the development of improvisation skills and increase awareness of how a small jazz ensemble functions.

This resource will help teachers to develop activities that incorporate differentiated strategies to meet the specific learning needs of their students across a range of abilities.  The material allows teachers to structure individual pieces that are suitable for all levels of proficiency.  This workshop will allow teachers attending to gain an understanding of concepts specific to jazz music and to develop engaging activities for ensemble or classroom work.  Lesson plans using this material can be focused on specific musical challenges with strategies for rehearsals, problem-solving and creative thinking.

Workshops with the Gai Bryant Quintet will explore the rhythmic patterns of Cuban music styles and jazz improvisation.  Each workshop will be a hands-on experience with all participants learning to build Cuban styles from the bottom up and dig into divergent approaches to jazz improvisation.  Please bring your instruments!!!
